My coach used to email me a word doc

Before apps, before device sync, before any of it, my coach emailed me a Word doc with my training plan. It worked. It got me to the Olympic trials. Here's why, and what it taught me about what real coaching actually is.

Back when I was racing professionally in the early 2000s, my coach would send my training plan as a Word document over email.

That was it. There was no app and no device sync, because those didn't exist yet.

Just a Word doc sent to my inbox every few weeks.

Training platforms existed back then, but they weren't commonplace. Most coaches were still working in Word docs and Spreadsheets.

And honestly? It worked bloody well because the plan was good and he was there when I needed help.

When I had questions, I'd email him. When something urgent came up, we'd jump on Skype to chat.

It was simple, and it worked.

He wasn't analysing every session either. If something stood out, we'd look at it. Otherwise, he trusted me to do the work as he wrote it.

But here's what made it actually work. He wasn't racing with me. He wasn't at my swim sessions, following me in a car during my long ride, or keeping time at the track.

I had to make decisions for myself, so he taught me how to think.

What to do when I was sick. How to handle travel weeks. What it felt like to be genuinely fatigued versus just tired. When to push and when to back off and not feel guilty about it.

That's what a real coach does. They don't just write a plan, they teach you how to use it.

That's basically what Coached is, except the Word doc is now an app, and Zoom replaced Skype.

Our app builds your training plan. It's high quality, personalised, and effective. It makes it easy to shift your sessions around, adjust your frequency, and keep life in balance.

But behind the app, there are real coaches, like me. People with real experience who will actually talk with you.

We check in at key points in your prep. We answer all your questions. We can tweak your plan when something's not right, and if you need a proper conversation, you can book a call.

There are no bots. And no influencers lending their name to something they're not truly involved in. Just a small professional team of coaches in your corner, helping you get smarter as well as fitter.

If you've ever used a training app and quietly wished there was a real coach behind it, or had a personal coach but found it too expensive, too intense, or just too much, Coached is probably a good fit.

It's the best of both.
